When I was seven years old, the movie Now and Then came out on video, and my sister rented it. I begrudgingly watched it, but ended up falling in love with Christina Ricci. Even though her grown-up counterpart in the movie was Rosie O’Donnell.
Even after we returned the movie to the rental place, I became obsessed. I bought the soundtrack on cassette (I didn’t have my own CD player yet), I sought out other Ricci movies, and even resorted to watching Now and Then scrambled on the pay-per-view channel. Some boys watch scrambled porn. I watched a scrambled coming-of-age tale about four girls in the 1960s.
This all culminated when I wrote Christina Ricci a letter professing my admiration for her. I inexplicably included a dollar with the letter. My mom asked if I wanted an autograph or something of the sort, but I seriously just included the dollar as a gift. “She doesn’t need it,” my mom said. I never got a letter or an autograph or anything back. So ended my first celebrity crush.
